Glenmuir High School was founded by the late Rt Revd Percival Gibson, Bishop of Jamaica, and was opened on September 15, 1958 as a private co-educational secondary school of the Anglican Diocese. The school started with a population of 55 students and 4 members of staff on a 25-acre property. On this property there was only one building and this was used not only to provide classrooms and administrative offices but also to house the Headmaster, Dr S. H Scott, and his family. After a year the school was recognized as a Government grant-aided secondary school and consequently the Ministry of Education erected the first block of classrooms, which were put to use at the beginning of the Summer Term 1959. Atthe beginning of the Easter Term, January, 1962, the enrolment stood at 236 pupils. The second block of classrooms had been completed, allowing for 55 new pupils.

Since 1958, the enrolment of the school has increased to 1309 students and there are at present 69 members of staff. The present Principal, Mr. Clement Radcliffe, B.Sc., Dip. Ed., MA, is himself a past student of the school. Having graduated from the University of the West Indies in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science degree, First Class Honours, he returned to serve his alma mater in that same year. In 1981, he was awarded the degree of Master of Education from the same University. Under Mr Radcliffe’s leadership, the school has continued on the path of academic, cultural and social achievements started by its first and only other Principal, Dr Sydney Scott.

As the years went by, the school grew not only in pupil attendance but also in extra-curricular activities. In 1959 the House system was introduced. The Houses are: deRoux, Muirhead and Pawsey, and later in 1976 an additional House, Gibson House, which was named after the late Bishop Percival Gibson. It was not until 1960 that any competition in sports among the Houses began. Sports has been doing very well over the years. The football team has done well in the DaCosta Cup football competition. Netball, table tennis and athletics have also been making strides in the school’s sporting arena.

By 1962, there were five extra-curricular activities at Glenmuir, namely, Drama, Debating, Elocution, Square Dancing and Choral Music. Choral Music was a favourite and the school now boasts of having one of the best school choirs in the island.

Over the years the number of clubs in the school has grown to include Girl Guides, Rangers, Cadet Corps, Jaycees, Key Club, Red Cross, Environmental Club, Etiquette Society, 4-H Club and Science Club. All these clubs have been functioning well in the school and in their various spheres have met with varying degrees of success.

The school has entered different competitions and has done very well. In the National Spanish Festival the school has won the Governor-General’s Trophy on numerous occasions. In 1995, the school’s team was finally victorious in the National Schools Challenge Quiz and has since won it on a number of occasions. The school has also won the Inter-Secondary Schools debating competition twice and placed second, once.
